Big Change: Microsoft Discontinues Movies & TV Store on Xbox and Windows
In a significant shift for its entertainment services, Microsoft has officially closed its Movies & TV store on Xbox consoles and Windows PCs. Starting today, users can no longer purchase new movies or TV shows through the Microsoft Store on these platforms. However, any content you’ve already bought will remain accessible on your devices.
“Downloads will continue to be available on Windows and in HD max resolution,” Microsoft confirmed. But there’s a catch — you’ll need to use the Movies & TV app on Windows or Xbox to watch your content. There’s no option to transfer purchases to other services, unless your movies are eligible for Movies Anywhere (US only). Microsoft has also clarified that no refunds will be issued for previous purchases.
This shutdown had been looming for some time. Many Xbox and Windows users grew wary after Microsoft discontinued its Groove Music service in 2017. The company’s journey into digital video started back in 2006 with the Zune Video Marketplace, later evolving into Xbox Video in 2012, and then the Movies & TV app in 2015. Now, nearly a decade later, that chapter is closing.
Going forward, Microsoft will rely on major players like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, and other popular streaming services to serve entertainment needs on Windows and Xbox platforms. The company has promised continued support for any playback issues involving previously purchased content, though many loyal users are left wondering how long Microsoft will keep the servers running.
